Alka Yagnik was born on 20th March 1966 in Kolkata. Her mother was a classical singer. With her inspiration Alka started singing in Aakasavani at the age of 6. She waited for few years. Impressed with her voice Laxmikantha famous Music Director gave her two alternatives an immediate start as a dubbing artist or a later break as a singer. Alka’s mother Subha chose the second option for her daughter.
Music Career:
She was trained in classical music and used to perform Bhajans on All India Radio from the age 6 .
Her first song was for the film Payal Ki Jhankaar in (1980) and continued in successive years.
Her first big break was with the film Tezaab which was released in the year 1988. This song brought her first film fare award. She sung in languages like Urdu, Hindi, Marathi, Telugu, English and Malayalam.
She worked with great composers like Kalyanji anandji, Rahul dev, Lakshmikant, Rahaman, Shankar- ehesan-loy, Keeravani, Himesh reshmiya etc.
She has been the judge for shows like Sa Re Ga ma Pa and Star voice.
She has sung 2,485 Hindi songs in 1,114 films. She is the fifth Bollywood singer of all time to sing more songs after Asha Bhosle (7866 songs), Lata Mangeshkar (5596 songs), Mohammed Rafi (4,778 songs) and Kishore Kumar (2,703 songs).
