Mohammed Rafi Profile: Mohammed Rafi (1924 to 1980) is a famous Indian playback singer. He was the most popular singer in Bollywood. He has songs in all genres like patriotic songs, classical, sad, romantic, bhajans and Ghazels. He has sung nearly 7,400 songs in many languages. He has received 6 film fares and 1 national award. Early life:
Mohammed Rafi was born on 24th December 1924 in now Amritsar, Punjab, India. He was the second eldest of six brothers. He used sing and imitates the fakir in their street. His family later moved to Lahore. Rafi’s brother had a friend named Abdul Hameed, he was the one who recognized the talent in Rafi. He also encouraged rafi for singing and later convinced his family to move to Mumbai.
Rafi learnt classical music and his first performance was at the age of 13.
He made his Hindi film debut in Gaon Ki Gori in 1945
When he was in Mumbai with hammed sahib he used to get opportunities.
Career:
Aji dil ho kaabu mein to dildar ki aisi taisi…,” for Gaon Ki Gori, which became Rafi’s first recorded song in a Hindi film
Rafi recorded another song in1945 for the film Gaon Ki Gori, “Aji Dil Ho Kaaboo Mein”. He considered this song his first Hindi language song.
He appeared in 2 movies on screen in 1945 for the song “Tera Jalwa Jis Ne Dekha” in the film Laila Majnu and other.
He has sung numerous numbers of songs in his career in various languages.
After partition of India and Pakistan Rafi decided to stay back in India and settled in Mumbai.
L.Saigal and G.M.Durrani were considered as Idols by Rafi.
He had worked with Naushad, S.D.Burman, Shankar Jaikisthan, ravi, Madan mohan, O.P.Nayar and with many more in his career.
Rafi has numerous numbers of hit songs in his career. Along with successful career his life was also involved with some controversies and issues. The controversies were mostly in the matter of Latha mangeshkar, their Guinness records, total number of songs etc.
After rafi’s death Guinness world records added Latha’s name as singer with most recordings.
His last song was for the movie Aas Paas, which he had recorded with Laxmikant-Pyarelal.
As per the record Rafi has sung 4,516 Hindi film songs, 112 non-Hindi film songs, and 328 private (non-film) songs from 1945 to 1980. The Guinness Book entries for Rafi and Lata were removed in 1991.
In 2011, Lata’s sister Asha Bhosle was given the title.
Personal life:
Rafi married two times, he first married cousin; Bashira. The marriage ended when his first wife refused to live in India following the killing of her parents during the riots of Partition of India and moved to Lahore, Pakistan.
Rafi had four sons and three daughters; his first son Saeed was from his first marriage.
