Shankar Mahadevan was born in Chembur, Mumbai, and Maharashtra on 3rd March 1967. He learnt Hindustani classical and Carnatic music in his childhood, he started playing veena from the age of 5. Mahadevan graduated in 1988 with a degree in computer science and software engineering from the Ramrao Adik Institute of Technology in Navi Mumbai, affiliated to Mumbai University, and was a software engineer for Leading Edge. Mahadevan was fluent in Hindi, Tamil, Marati, Telugu and English.
Career:
After working for Leading Edge Systems (now Trigyn Technologies Limited), Mahadevan took a dare step into music.
Mahadevan was noted for the release of his first album (Breathless) in 1998. The album’s title track was engineered to seem to be sung in one breath, hence its title.
He later ventured into music direction and became part of the Shankar–Ehsaan–Loy trio, composing for Hindi films.
He has worked with several top composers including Rahman, Ilayaraja, Yuvan Shankar Raja (for whom he has sung the maximum number of songs in Tamil), Harris Jayaraj, Vidyasagar, Mani Sharma, Devi Sri Prasad, G. V. Prakash Kumar, Vijay Antony, S.S. Thaman, Anirudh Ravichander and others.
Mahadevan is a team captain; judge and mentor on the Star Plus musical show Music Ka Maha Muqqabla for the Shankar’s Rock stars team, which won Music Ka Maha Muqqabala 2010.
In March 2011 Mahadevan founded the Shankar Mahadevan Academy along with Sridhar Ranganathan, his classmate and friend from his college days. The academy offers tutorials and virtual with live teachers for vocal courses in Carnatic and Hindustani classical music, religious chanting, Indian folk music, Indie music and Bollywood songs
He was invited by UNESCO and the US State Department to perform at the UN General Assembly hall for the finale of the International Jazz Festival on 30 April 2012. Mahadevan is a mentor on the Zee TV musical reality show Sa Re Ga Ma Pa 2012.
Personal Life:
Sankar Mahadevan Married Sangeetha, a Maharashtrian. The couple had 2 sons. Elder one is Siddarth Mahadevan was also a singer, he made his debut in 2013 with a song in movie “Zinda”. Their youngest son Shivam Mahadevan was also a singer; he made his debut in 2013 with a song in Dhoom-3
