Rahman was born in Chennai. Dileep Kumar was his birth name. His father R.K. Sekhar was a composer. Rahaman used to accompany his father in the studio by playing keyboard. He lost his father at the age of 9. The family survived with the rental of his father’s musical equipment. Rahman is a keyboard player and arranger for bands for his childhood friend’s sivamani, John Antony, Suresh peters, Jo Jo and Raja and founded the Chennai-based rock group Nemesis Avenue.
From the age of 11 he started playing in the orchestra, he started working with composers like Ilayaraja, Rajkoti etc.
Rahman was introduced to QadiriIslam when his younger sister was seriously ill in 1984. His mother was a practicing Hindu. He converted to Islam with other members of his family in 1989 at age 23, changing his name from R. S. Dileep Kumar to Allah Rakha Rahman (A. R. Rahman).
Career:
Rahman initially composed scores for documentaries and jingles for advertisements and Indian television channels.
In 1987 Rahman, then still known as Dileep, composed jingles for a line of watches introduced by Allwyn.
He also made the jingles for some advertisements that went on to become very popular, including the popular jingle for Titan Watches, in which he used the theme from Mozart’s Symphony no.25.
In 1992, he was approached by director Mani Ratnam to compose the score and soundtrack for his Tamil film, Roja.
Rahman’s film career began in 1992 when he started Panchathan Record Inn, a recording and mixing studio in his backyard. It would become the most-advanced recording studio in Indiaand arguably one of Asia’s most sophisticated and high-tech studios.
Later he worked for the movie Yodha and in the same year he received National Film Award for the film
Working in several of India`s various language film industries, international cinema and theatre, Allah Rakkha Rahman has become one of the world’s top 10 all-time selling recording artists, in a career spanning over a decade.
The enormous success of his first Hindi venture was followed by the chart-topping soundtrack albums of films such as Bombay (1995) , Dil Se.. (1998), Taal (1999), Zubeida (2001), and Lagaan: Once Upon a Time in India (2001), which was nominated for best foreign-language film at the 2002 Academy Awards.

Rahman’s music led him to be noticed internationally with several of his tracks featuring in movies such as ‘The Lord of War’, ‘Inside Man’, ‘Planes’ and ‘The Accidental Husband’
In 2008, Rahman’s work gained global prominence with the extraordinary success of his score for ‘Slumdog Millionaire’ that won 8 Academy Awards including two for Rahman, for Best Score and Best Song.
Rahman won over 15 awards for this score including two Grammys, the Golden Globe and the BAFTA. In 2011, Rahman was nominated again for his work in ‘127 Hours’ at the Academy Awards, Golden Globes, BAFTA and won for Best Song at the Critics Choice Awards.
Rahman has been bestowed with the ‘Padma Bhushan’ and ‘Padma Shri’, two of India’s highest national civilian honours, recognizing his contribution to music, in addition to several other awards including 4 Indian National Film Awards and 28 Filmfare Awards
In 2011, Rahman joined a super band, SuperHeavy, comprising Mick Jagger, Joss Stone, Damian Marley and Dave Stewart. Rahman has collaborated with several other international artistes including Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan, Michael Jackson, Michael Bolton, MIA, Vanessa Mae, the Pussycat Dolls, Sarah Brightman, Dido, Hossam Ramzy, Hans Zimmer and Akon. Rahman remains one of the few mainstream artistes, classical adaptations of whose works have been performed live by the likes of the London Philharmonic Orchestra, Los Angeles Philharmonic Orchestra, Babelsberg Film Orchestra and the Birmingham Symphony Orchestra.

Rahman is married to Saira Banu and has three children: Khatija, Rahima and Ameen.Rahman is the uncle of composer G. V. Prakash Kumar, the son of his older sister A. R. Reihana
