Kishore Kumar’s Profile: Kishore Kumar (1929- 1987) was an Indian Playback singer, actor, lyricist, producer, director and screen writer. He is the top most singer in Bollywood. He sang mainly in Hindi and he also sang in Bengali, Marati, Kannada, Gujarathi, Assami, Malayalma, Urdu and odiya. He has sung in albums also. He has won 8 filmfare awards. He was awarded the “Lata Mangeshkar Award” by the Madhya Pradesh government and from that year onwards, the Madhya Pradesh Government initiated a new award called the “Kishore Kumar Award” for contributions to Hindi cinema. kishore Kumar was born in Bengali family in Khandwa now in Madya Pradesh. His birth name was Abhas Kumar Ganguly. His father was a lawyer and his mother was from Wealthy Bengali family.
Kishore was the youngest of all four siblings, the three siblings were Ashok (the eldest), Sati Devi, and Anoop. While Kishore was a child, his brother Ashok became a Bollywood actor. Later, Anoop also ventured into cinema with Ashok’s help. Spending time with his brothers, Kishore became interested in films and music.
He became a fan of singer-actor K. L. Saigal he considered him as his guru, and tried his singing style. He graduated from Christian College, Indore
Career:
Kumar’s first film appearance was in Shikari (1946), in which his brother Ashok played the lead role. Music director Khemchand Prakash gave Kumar a chance to sing “Marne ki duayen kyon mangu” for the film Ziddi in 1948.
After this, Kumar was offered many other chances, but he was not very serious about a film career. In 1949, he settled in Mumbai.
Kumar played the hero in the Bombay Talkies film Andolan (1951), directed by Phani Majumdar. Although he got some acting assignments with the help of his brother, he was more interested in becoming a singer.
He later acted in several movies “Naukari” in 1954 and “Musafir” in 1957.
In the 1960’s Kishore Kumar began to expand his involvement to include almost every aspect of film production. He produced, directed, and acted in “Jhumroo” (1961).
Furthermore, he wrote the lyrics for the title song, and composed music for all of the songs in the film. Other films that he produced and directed were “Door Ka Rahi” (1971) and “Door Waadiyon Mein Kahin” (1980).
He has numerous songs in his career in various languages and also as an actor acted in many movies.
He also contributed as director, producer and lyricist.
He is the receiver of 8 film fare awards.
Personal Life:
Kishore Kumar’s personal life started in 1951 he married the first of his four wives, the actress / singer Ruma Guha Thakurta (a.k.a. Ruma Ghosh). This marriage lasted until 1958 when they divorced. This union produced a son, Amit Kumar. (Today Amit Kumar is a noted actor, singer, music director and director.)
In 1960 he married the actress Madhubala (real name Mumtaz Begum Jehan Dehlavi). He was Hindu and she was Muslim. Their marriage was a civil marriage and Kishore Kumar’s parents refused to attend. Later Kishore and Madhubala had a Hindu ceremony to appease his parents, but to very little advantage. After only a month of marriage, she leaves the Kumar’s household and returns to her own residence.
They remain married for the rest of her life, but under somewhat strained circumstances. At the time she was suffering from a heart condition. It became progressively worse and she died on February 23, 1969.
