Shruthi was born in Chennai to Actors Kamal Haasan and Sarika Takur. Her father was an Iyengar and her mother (daughter of Maharashtrian and Rajput).
Her younger sister Akshara Haasan represents India nationally for Ballroom Latin dancing.
Haasan focused on cinema and music, and eventually traveled to the USA to continue to learn music at the Musicians Institute in California, before returning to Chennai.

Shruti has started her career as a singer and later turned to acting.
She made her singing debut at the age of 6. While pursuing her studies in school, she made her singing debut in the Hindi language film, Chachi 420, with her father Kamal Haasan, who also directed the film.
Her second song came in Hey Ram, where she sang the bilingual versions of the title theme, Rama Rama with her father, in Hindi and in Tamil.
Later she continued to sing songs in various languages.

After much speculation, Shruti Haasan was confirmed as the music composer for the upcoming Tamil film Unnaipol Oruvan, with lead role played by her father Kamal Haasan who is also co-producer of the movie under Raj Kamal International. The bilingual, is a remake of the successful Hindi film, A Wednesday!, but the soundtracks of both the projects are entirely separate.
